Instructor's profile

Name Ron Palcic
Format: My classes are lively and  interactive.  The normal class will have a combination of lecture, discussion, cooperative discovery and/or problem solving with a partner or small groups.
Evaluations I give chapter examinations as well as a comprehensive final examination for the major portion of the student’s grade.  I also give quizzes throughout the semester, which make up around 10% to 30% of the total grade depending on the course. There are two types of quizzes given by me: the regular quizzes with a short format
of an examination and a homework quiz where you reproduce a sample of your homework for feedback and progress checking.  There may be additional assignments given throughout the semester that will affect your grade such as small projects, in class group activities, test analyses, take-home assignments, and/or summaries.
Attendance: Regular attendance is extremely important for doing well in this or any mathematics course.  Much of the material presented in class will facilitate your understanding of the content of the course.  In addition, attending class regularly helps you to understand the material you read as well as to get insight into subjects that go beyond the text material.  Classes have unannounced quizzes and other activities for which grades are given.
Homework: Each class has an associated homework assignment.  I will periodically give homework quizzes throughout the semester where you, the student, will reproduce a selected number of homework problems (a sample of your work) to be graded, recorded and returned to the student for feedback on your progress.
Calculators: I encourage you to have a calculator.  All courses from College Algebra and above will involve the use of graphing calculators.  My preference is the TI-83 or TI-83 Plus.  It’s about the easiest to learn to use.  I always allow calculator use in class and during examinations.
Availability: I have at least one office hour per day, but I’m here more often than that.  I encourage you to make an appointment that fits into your schedule.  Also, I have no problem with you calling me at home (Please, no calls after 9:00 p.m.).
Additional Information:

I hope you find any course I teach an enjoyable activity.  Our collective attitude will go a long way in determining our personal success and the success of the class as a whole.  Your progress in the course will be greatly influenced by how well you can manage your time.  Please be reasonable in setting aside time for your homework, readings and examination preparations.
