Documentation systems are codes that allow writers to give
credit where credit is due in an abbreviated form that readers can recognize.
Because various fields of study value different aspects of written
discourse, several documentation systems exist.
MLA (Modern Language Association) is most commonly used by English.
The amount and order of information the MLA code requires shows that it values
the text.
For additional MLA help,

Writing Center handout on the topic.
The JCCC Writing Center also has useful hard copy handouts.
