English 122 Composition II

Because so much writing required in college and in the workplace demands the
ability to synthesize information gathered from various sources, Composition II
focuses on skills essential to gathering, comprehending, analyzing,
evaluating and synthesizing information. Composition II also emphasizes
organizing and polishing steps important in composing expository, evaluative,
and persuasive prose.

Online Learning:
Online learning has both benefits and challenges. Please go
to my discussion at Online and then return to specifics
about this course.
Getting started
Students need to orient themselves to Angel (see
the information on the Online page for details about how to learn about this
learning management system), adjust computers, and update virus protection
before class begins. Students also need to check their JCCC email accounts
a week before class begins for information about the course.
On-Campus Class Meetings
None. Depending on the make up of the class,
some optional on-campus gatherings (JCCC and/or Lawrence) may be offered.
Tests
Yes--given online.
Self-paced or deadlines
Though there are no required meeting times, the
course has specific windows of opportunity to submit assignments.
It has deadlines. What the course is NOT:
it is not an independent
study course; it is not
individualized instruction; it is not
self-paced.
Frequency of course access
Students need to log on about three times per
week for at least five-eight hours of work per week.
Basic online format
Composition is a process course. In addition to
major assignments, students complete preparatory exercises—all in Angel.
Students also engage in ongoing conversations on the course topics via email,
online discussions, and chat within Angel. Student-to-student exchange of
papers is also a course requirement.
