1. Roughly 3.12kB in length. 1kB = 1,000 DNA bases.

2. Compare to phage

A. Using 7 point type about 6kB bases can be put on a page.

B. Human genome would require roughly 512,000 pages.

C. If laid out in a single strip...3,280 miles.

3. Imagine being given strips about 3 foot long which may or may not overlap with other strips and trying to reconstruct the original sequence.

4. Packing is important: length of all the DNA in a single human cell's haploid genome is about 1.0 m based on distance between bases of 0.34nm. Since somatic cells have two copies of each chromosome, the length of the DNA in the chromosomal portion of the genome is about 2.0 m or about 6.5 ft.
