Course Title: Classical Mythology Honors: Homeric Greek
Course Number: HUM 281

Course Description: After completing this one hour honors contract the student will be able to read Homeric Greek, demonstrate competence in the basic forms of Homeric grammar, and translate and recite the first 10 lines of Homer's Iliad.

Prerequisite: This contract must be taken concurrently or consecutively with Classical Mythology (HUM 155)

Students must have a 3.5+ GPA, and/or demonstrate an affinity for language study.

Course Requirements

  Schedule of mentor/student conferences:

The student will meet with the mentor at least fifteen times during the semester on the days and time indicated above.

Mentor's Expectations:

  1. The student will complete all the requirements of this contract at a level of academic excellence.

     
  2. The mentor will have the opportunity of working with the student on a tutorial basis.

     
  3. The student will achieve a more advanced understanding of Greek mythology by being able to read one of ancient Greece's greatest literary/mythological works in its original language.

Criteria for evaluating the work:

  1. Attendance at required meetings with the mentor.

     
  2. Completion of all assignments required by this contract at a level of academic excellence.

Course Goals

  After successful completion of this Honors Contract, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and pronounce Homeric Greek.
  2. Demonstrate competence in the basic forms of Homeric Greek, such as noun declension, verb conjugation, and sentence structure.
  3. Translate the first ten lines of Homer's Iliad.
  4. Scan the hexameter verse of the first ten lines of Homer's Iliad.
  5. Describe the unique contribution of Homer to the development of ancient Greek literature, mythology and religion.
The following tasks will be performed by the student:
  1. Meet with the mentor at least fifteen (15) times during the semester for at least one hour.
  2. Demonstrate a basic competence in Homeric Greek by means of two review tests on Greek vocabulary and grammar.
  3. Recite the first ten lines of Homer's Iliad, in hexameter verse, to the Classical Mythology class and present a short (5-10 minute) lecture about Homer as a poet and the Iliad as an epic poem.
