(HUM 137) Between Heaven and Hell: The story of one thousand years of artistic life in Russia...W. Bruce Lincoln With these words, the late historian W. Bruce Lincoln aptly titled his masterful survey of Russian cultural development. Unfortunately, the title all too accurately describes the suffering of the men and women whose artistic achievements allow us to transcend the world into which we were born. This course is an interdisciplinary survey of Russian cultural history from the ninth century to the present day. At each weekly meeting, we will examine representative examples of Russian art, architecture, music, theatre, dance, literature, and philosophy in their historical context. Our classroom work will be coupled with web assignments that will allow us to visit some of the finest sources of information on Russian culture available in the world. |
