Political Science Internship Opportunities

Look before you Leap!!

Sample what the work world of political science has to offer before you commit yourself to a major…you may like it!

Apply what you have learned in your political science classes to the practice of politics and related career fields.  Three hours of credit can be earned while learning the "ins" and "outs" of politics and government service in state, local or national government settings or not-for-profit organizations. Students spend the equivalent of 10-hours per week performing internship duties over the course of the semester or a total of 150 hours.

Intern applicants must be mature, self-disciplined, work well with others, and demonstrate a commitment to the field.

Intern applicants must completed six-hours of political science course work at JCCC or another college within the last two years earning minimum of a “3.0” on a “4.0” scale in those courses, have the written recommendation of your political science classroom instructor and permission of the Political Science Internship Coordinator prior to undertaking their internship.

Previously students have interned in Johnson Country city government, for Johnson County City council members, for Kansas State Senators, for Kansas U.S. Senators, for the International Relations Council of Kansas City, and for lobbying groups in Washington D. C.

Some units of government, the Kansas Legislature, Kansas Democratic Party, U.S. Senators Pat Roberts and Kit Bond regularly advertise for interns.  JCCC has an internship position available with the International Relations Council of Kansas City every fall.  Otherwise, we let students identify an appropriate position in a state, local or national government setting or not-for-profit organization of their choice.

For detailed information on internships, contact Carolyn Foster, JCCC Internship Coordinator (mailto:cfoster@jccc.edu) or Professor Marilyn A. W. Gaar, Political Science Internship Coordinator (mailto:mgaar@jccc.edu) or review the course materials at http://staff.jccc.net/mgaar/.
