Russian pianist and composer Vladimir Ryabov will perform in Recital Hall, Carlson Center, as part of the Ruel-Joyce Performance series on Monday, March 24, 2003.
Mr. Ryabov has performed at the piano throughout Europe and the United States. A prize pupil of the late Aram Khatchaturian (Sabre Dance, Gayne Ballet), he is a composer of both secular and sacred music. His choral music for the Orthodox Church is performed throughout Russia and in the United States. Recordings of his symphonic music are available through Betta International.
Mr. Ryabov's performance is made possible by a grant from the Scholars in Residence program. Mr. Ryabov also will be speaking to students in the Russian culture and Russian literature classes.

The Eleventh annual Seminar will be held this summer on the Smolnyi Campus of St. Petersburg University. The Seminar was founded in 1992 and each year since has brought together small groups of Russian and American scholars in a setting conducive to an exchange of ideas.

Papers are encouraged and round table discussion/panels will be formed for topics of interest including:
Russian and American scholars, students, and other professionals are invited to submit proposals for inclusion on the program. These may take several forms:

An individual paper, to be
added to a panel;
·
An offer to organize a panel
(with several papers) or a Round Table discussion on
a particular topic;
·
An offer to serve as a
discussant on a panel or to a specific paper;
·
An offer to serve as
chairperson of a panel or Round Table; or
· Any other idea you would like to submit.
Deadline for seminar applications is March 1, 2003. (Special hotel rates available only until February 12.)
Proposed papers related to this year's theme are solicited from anyone planning to attend: professors, researchers, graduate students, or other professionals. Papers of appropriate length for a 15 to 20 minute presentation should be sent by the deadline to Professor Will Adams or Professor Boris Shiriaev to review for inclusion in the program. Send your paper to the appropriate address below.
In 2001, the Russian-American International Studies Association (RAISA) was awarded by the U. S. Internal Revenue Service tax-exempt status as a Section 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. This means that all contributions, and all payments made to or through RAISA for appropriate educational and business purposes are tax deductible. An integral part of the Russian-American International Studies Association’s mission is to provide scholarships to Russian and American students and to assist in arrangements for the support of educational, research, and professional exchanges between Russian and American academic communities. Russian Culture and Language Study Program
Introduction to Russian Culture Field Study HUM 138
St. Petersburg, Russia
Dates: late May -early June, 2003 (tentative dates).
Cost: Approximately $2000 Includes airfare, housing with a Russian family, three meals a day, instructional and administrative fees, program tour fees, evening performances, and tour transportation (cost subject to change.)
Not Included: Passport and visa fees, health insurance, local transportation and personal spending money.
Program: Students will earn one credit hour of HUM 138 (Introduction to Russian Culture Field Study) and two credits of FL 291 (Independent Study in Russian Language). Prior to departure, the group will meet at JCCC for orientation sessions that will prepare you for this educational experience.
While in Russia, the morning program includes classes in language and culture. During the afternoons, students will be guided through the historical and cultural sites of the city. You will visit St. Peter and Paul Fortress, Petrodvorets and Peter’s Summer Palace, the Winter Palace and the Hermitage museum. Evening performances of theatre, opera and ballet are included and escorted excursions to Pushkin and Novgorod will add to your understanding of this rich and interesting culture.
Eligibility: Students in good standing who are enrolled in Introduction to Russian Culture or Russian Language, or who have completed Modern Russian History, may enroll in the program.* Teachers and other community members are encouraged to apply.
