COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is the first course in Calculus as it applies to business, psychology, and the physical sciences. Concepts include measuring the slope of a curve, writing equations of tangent lines, finding maximum and minimum points, determining the rate of change of a function, and measuring the area under a curve. Algebraic skills and application problems are stressed. Specific calculus topics include finding limits, differentiation of algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions, and Integration of algebraic and exponential functions.

Students will complete units covering applications of functions and algebra, limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, integrals, and applications of integrals.

COURSE INFORMATION

Course Type:

Transfer

Credit Hours:

3

Prerequisites:

Grade of C or higher in College Algebra (Math 171)or Precalculus (Math 173) or an appropriate score on the COMPASS test.

Textbook:

Thinkwell Calculus software package

Supplies:

Graphing calculator.

Prerequisite Advisory
The majority of mathematics courses are sequential. A student should have a working knowledge of prerequisite course material (a grade of C or better). There should not be a lapse of more than one year between completion of the prerequisite course and enrollment in the subsequent course.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

After completing this course, the student should be able to:

1. Evaluate limits of functions using graphs, tables and algebraic methods.
2. Demonstrate the use of limits to determine continuity of a function at a point.
3. Determine differentiability of a function at a point using limits and graphs.
4. Demonstrate the use of the limit definition to find the derivative.
5. Differentiate algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions.
6. Produce equations of tangent lines.
7. Demonstrate the use of derivatives to describe the behavior of a function.
8. Apply derivatives in applications including economics, physics and social sciences.
9. Antidifferentiate algebraic and exponential functions.
10. Apply the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to find the area under a curve and between two curves.

SOFTWARE PACKAGE:

You will purchase the computer package Thinkwell Calculus instead of a textbook. This package will be available at the JCCC Bookstore Computer Desk.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Computer Lessons
Because this course is conducted using the computer, you must spend at least 4 to 6 hours per week working on the computer in order to master the material. Your work on the computer will continually be monitored and you will receive progress reports following each unit. Each lesson consists of practice exercises, videos, and a mastery quiz. You will be able to print out study pages through the Thinkwell link.

Homework
You must practice math and work on homework problems every day. Your Thinkwell package will include exercises online for practice in each section.

Mastery Quizzes
Students must pass the mastery quizzes with a score greater than 70%. These may be taken up to five (5) times - the highest score will count as your grade. You are encouraged to PRACTICE before each attempt and to strive for a 100% on these quizzes.

Written Homework Assignments
Students will complete four (4) written assignments that will be mailed to the instructor. Students will also complete an on-line mid-term practice and an on-line final-practice as part of this component.

Late Assignments
Late assignments that are not completed by the posted due date/time will be scored as a "zero." This will adversely affect your average on this section of the course.

Discussion

Discussion is an important element of an online course.  Participating in class discussion on the discussion board will help students clarify course material, give a chance for students to contribute to the course, and help alleviate the isolation that can come with an online course.  Students will be expected to post to the class discussion board 3-5 times a week with postings of at least 30 words.  Discussion prompts will be given by the instructor.  Grades will be determined as followed:

        Full credit:

For making 3-5 postings per week—including responding to the instructor’s original posting.

         For reading and responding to other student comments;

For participating over a number of days -- as opposed to waiting until the last day.

Partial credit: Short or summary-type postings.

      --   No credit: Zero postings.

Midterm Exam
The midterm will concentrate on your ability to find derivatives. All students MUST take this exam on campus at the JCCC testing center. You will have one week to complete the midterm. Be sure and check the calendar and announcement for the dates of the midterm.

Final
All students must take a comprehensive final exam. No student may be exempt from the final exam. Any student not taking the exam will receive a score of zero for the final exam. All students MUST take this exam on campus at the JCCC testing center. You will have one week to complete the final. Be sure and check the calendar and announcement for the dates of the final.

EVALUATION:

Mastery Quizzes – 20%
Quizzes will be taken after each section through the Thinkwell site. You may take them up to five (5) times. You MUST score at least a 70% on each quiz before the end of the semester. In order to receive full credit for mastery quizzes, the first attempt must occur by the due date/time as posted on the class schedule.

Written Homework Assignments - 10%
Students will complete four (4) written assignments that will be mailed to the instructor. Students will also complete an on-line midterm practice and an online final-practice as part of this component.

Discussion – 10%

Students will be active in weekly online discussion

Midterm Exam – 30%
