[The council referred to the Sanhedrin, the equivalent of the supreme court (probably alludes to God's Heavenly Tribunal).]

[Hell-fire literally is translated as "the hell of fire" or "Gehenna of fire." The concept of hell was viewed differently by various Jewish teachers. Some viewed hell fire as consuming the body and soul while others envisioned an eternal torture.]
71 Therefore, if ye shall come unto me, or shall desire to come unto me, and rememberest that thy brother hath aught against thee,
72 Go thy way unto thy brother, and first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I will receive you.
[Judaism stressed reconciliation between individuals and God. God expected a pure heart even over sacrifices. See Genesis 4:4-7, Proverbs 15:8, Isaiah 1:10-15, Jeremiah 6:20, Amos 5:21-24]
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;
24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

[A farthing, literally called the Bronze Quadrans of Pontius Pilate was a bronze Roman coin (two varieties) worth between ½ and 1½ cents--worth only a few minutes of labor. The widows 2 mites were worth a quadran.]

[The opening line uses the same Greek as the 10th commandment in Exodus 20:17--You shall not desire your neighbor's wife.]

[Corporal punishment (loosing a hand or eye) viewed as easier punishment than capital punishment (loosing one's life). Some Rabbis taught that we're resurrected in exactly the form in which we die...before being made whole by God.

[Jesus commandments were even stricter than the law...no one could claim he was breaking the law or encouraging others to break the law--punishable by political and social ostracism.]

[It was common to swear by something rather than by the name of God--since breaking such an oath was less crucial. Christ is telling his listeners to keep all promises.]

[Slapping someone on the right cheek was the most serious insult in the ancient world, short of inflicting physical harm.]

[The typical Jew wore a linen under garment and an outer garment (cloak) that server as topcoat, blanket, carpet, bedroll and sometimes as collateral for a loan--if the borrower were allowed to use it at night for a blanket. To give someone your cloak would be to appear in public with less than appropriate attire.]
40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.
[A legal case to regain a cloak was sure to succeed because no creditor could withhold a poor person's out garment from them.]
42 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have it; and if he sue thee again, let him have thy cloak also.
87 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
[In verses 86-88 Christ is emphasizing that personal relationships are more important than possessions.]

[Impressment by Romans meant an individual could be compelled to carry equipment and supplies.]

[Every 7 years the Year of Release occurred when all debts were forgiven. Even if the loan was taken in the last couple of years before the Year of Release. Deuteronomy 15:7-11 cautions the Jews to loan money to the poor even if the Year of Release is approaching.]

[Jesus' audience expected a Messiah to overthrow Roman, instead he commanded them to act with loving servitude to the oppressor and non-resistance. The Pharisees who detested foreign domination would have been livid in their disagreement.]
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
[Praying for ones persecutors was not the Old Testament norm, even for the most pious. The O.T. includes times when the Jews prayed for the destruction and overthrow of their enemies.
45 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.
46 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you;


91 That ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good; therefore those things which were of old time, which were under the law, in me are all fulfilled.
