Painted Redstart (Myioborus pictus)

Coldwater Lake, Comanche County, Kansas

June 28, 2003

Here are a few more photos of this beautiful little bird that I managed to get today, beginning just after daybreak.  It was very accommodating in every way except for sitting still in good light.  The caretaker at the Coldwater Lake campground told me as I was leaving this afternoon that 34 people have come to see the bird (I’m guessing the total number is higher than that), and he asked incredulously if it is true that one man even flew in from Chicago to see it.  I said I was afraid so. Pending acceptance by the Kansas Bird Records Committee, this is only the second record of a Painted Redstart in Kansas, and the first supported by physical evidence.  It was discovered by Pat Seibert and others and reported to the KSBIRD-L listserv by Marty Kamp on June 23, 2003.  I’d like to add my personal thanks to everyone who has contributed to this latest Kansas birding phenomenon, including the personnel at Coldwater Lake who so graciously allowed us to linger at the campground free of charge.
