Astronomy at Johnson County Community College

Division of Science, Health Care and Mathematics

Two introductory Astronomy courses are offered at JCCC, one on-line (ASTR 120, 3cr) and one on-campus (ASTR 122, 4cr). Both courses study the universe from the Earth, Moon, and planets to the stars and most distant galaxies. Topics include black holes, quasars, the origin of the universe, Hubble's contributions, and the possibility of life on other planets. The on-campus course includes an integrated laboratory component where students gain hands-on experience with the concepts discussed in lectures.

Prof. Patterson will be teachings sections 1, 2 and 3. Prof. Koch will be teaching sections 4 and 5.

The Paul Tebbe Observatory

JCCC has an observatory on the top of the CLB building that is equipped with both 8-inch and 12-inch telescopes. Students of the on-campus course observe with this equipment throughout the semester, and the observatory is open to the public twice a year for a public viewing session called Evening With The Stars.
