JCCC INSTRUCTOR PROFILE

Christopher Imm

Class Format:  Be warned, I will expect you to read, review and practice material prior to that days' class.  In this regard we can focus on specific examples, definitions or theorems which you are having difficulties with instead of having me try to guess what you are confused with.  During a usual class meeting you can expect interactive discussion over the material assigned for that day.  Problem presentation is a big part of the discovery learning approach which is incorporated into most of my classes (College Algebra and above).  Expect to present a problem on the board at least once over the semester.  The remainder of the class will be spent on group discussion and hands on experimentation with problems including immediate feedback for selected problems you will attempt during class.

Evaluation:  Evaluation varies from class to class.  Usually, problem presentation and solutions or homework and projects will count roughly a third of your grade.  Unit examinations will count for a bit over a third and the final examination will count for just short of  the remaining third.  Attendance and participation are used in borderline cases.

Homework:  Some classes will be required to present and turn in solutions to a problem presentation packet.  In lower level classes you will be expected to work and grade prime problems in your book and also turn in and grade some evens in your book.  Late homework will not be accepted, however extra points are usually built in and you may turn in a homework assignment or problem set anytime before or on the day it is due with exception of problems we check in class.

Attendance:  Attendance is strongly recommended and some material on the exams and final may be missed if absent for class.  Good attendance will be rewarded by replacing the lowest test grade by the final exam percentage.

Calculator/Computer:  In most classes I will expect you to have a TI-83 graphing calculator (this is the one I use in class).  You may use other calculators with some help from the Math Resource Center.  Symbolic manipulation calculators or ones with QWERTY keyboards will NOT be allowed on exams.  I will make use of the Excel Spreadsheet and other software such as Mathematica in many courses for examples.

Availability:  I am available in my office, CLB 202 during scheduled office hours, but I am always eager to schedule an appointment to further discuss the course material.  For a list of office hours, visit the schedule link.
